One of the worst-kept secrets of the past few years is that McDonald’s has been trying to get into the espresso business. Today, news services such as Reuters and the Wall Street Journal are reporting that McDonald’s plans to launch coffee bars with the new employee position of “barista”: McDonald’s coffee bars to take on [...]

I’ve lamented the bizarre insistence on paper-cups-only service by so many espresso retailers in America. Adding insult to injury, according to yesterday’s Deutsche Welle, now even the McDonald’s in Germany are breaking out the porcelain cups: McDonald’s Jazzes Up Restaurants Amid Anti-Union Accusations | Business | Deutsche Welle | 11.04.2007.

The news of Starbucks‘ death has been greatly exaggerated. That’s all I could think of when reading the media and blogosphere response over the past week to an executive memo written by Starbucks’ founder and corporate chairman, Howard Schultz (as reported here on Feb. 24). In the memo, the founder lamented the loss of Starbucks’ [...]

McDonald’s to expand espresso service across U.S.

Some say the definition of insanity is trying the same thing over and over again, expecting a different outcome. By that standard, McDonald’s executives should be fitted for straight-jackets and kept away from the plastic knives and forks in their fast-food restaurants. Despite repeated failures of McDonald’s McCafé in America since 2001, bull-headed McDonald’s execs [...]

Coffee taste test stirs hot debate

Posted by on 03 Feb 2007 | Tagged as: Consumer Trends, Starbucks

Yesterday, Consumer Reports announced that their taste testers rated McDonald’s premium coffee as superior to Starbucks‘ coffee. (Isn’t that a bit like a beauty contest between Courtney Love and Joan Rivers?) But the real story behind this isn’t their ratings so much as the response to these ratings: Coffee taste test stirs hot debate – [...]

Yesterday’s Sunday Times (London) ran a story concerning McDonald’s UK’s announcement of a coffee supply partnership with the Rainforest Alliance: McDonald’s brews up £1m fair trade deal – Sunday Times – Times Online. At first read, I opted not to add a blog entry on how the Rainforest Alliance served as another alternative example to [...]

In the “who just can’t let a failed idea die” contest between McDonald’s McCafé and the Sony Mini-Disc, McDonald’s seems to be upping the ante along the Central Coast of California: Espresso now comes express at McDonald’s – LompocRecord.com. The strangest part is that the article cites Marcos Salazar, an area supervisor for McDonald’s, as [...]

Posted by on 31 Aug 2006 | Tagged as: Consumer Trends

If you thought Starbucks was desperate to resort to podcasts to sell their coffee, McDonald’s recently promoted their premium roast coffee by hiring the Flying Wallendas to tightrope walk for its one-year anniversary: HOVERING OVER DETROIT: A close call on the high wire (Detroit Free Press). I’m not sure if McDonald’s wanted to send the [...]

Posted by on 16 Aug 2006 | Tagged as: Café Society, Consumer Trends, Restaurant Coffee, Starbucks

McDonald’s fell in love with the foreign smell of money brewing when their switch to premium coffee helped boost their sagging top line. Although McDonald’s is still stinging from their McCafé failures in recent years, apparently they are ready to strike out again — testing out espresso production and other specialty coffee drinks at six [...]
