Trip Report: Caffe D’Melanio

Posted by TheShot on 07 Aug 2008 | Tagged as: Local Brew

This large, spacious café, located near SF City College, is a rare Ingleside gem. It’s of Italian influence by way of Argentina. Part coffee roastery and café, part restaurant.
They have two sidewalk benches along Ocean Ave. in front (perhaps the only SF city street wide enough to land a 747). Inside there’s a wide space [...]

Trip Report: Nani’s Coffee

Posted by TheShot on 24 Jul 2008 | Tagged as: Local Brew

This café sits on the south side of Geary Blvd.’s viaduct/quasi-freeway exit, west of Masonic Ave. There’s a Denny’s-esque wall of curved glass that creates an almost greenhouse-like front enclosure, but you need to enter this small space by walking down the narrow passageway just past it.
Inside there’s a colorful interior with several café tables [...]

Trip Report: Blue Fog Market @ California St.

Posted by TheShot on 16 Jul 2008 | Tagged as: Beans, Local Brew

This small, local chain of delis opened in 2006. The shop is small but packed with a handful of finds. There are two chairs for seating in the corner, and near the coffee bar in front there’s a bench and a stand-up counter loaded with condiments along the California St. window.

And speaking of the [...]

Trip Report: Danilo’s Bakery BaoNecci Caffè

Given that our headaches with our Web hoster are resolving themselves at a snail’s pace, we’re itching to get back to business as usual. So we are carefully returning to publishing here (saving copies of our databases as frequently as possible) — even though we risk a future “blackout” at any given time. How better [...]

Trip Report Redux: Flying Goat Coffee @ 324 Center St. (Healdsburg, CA)

Posted by TheShot on 02 Jun 2008 | Tagged as: Beans, Foreign Brew, Local Brew, Quality Issues, Roasting, Starbucks

It’s been a rather sad week for coffee news. An embarrassment, really — with headlines dominated by the ridiculous. There’s Racheal Ray’s TV commercial promoting both Dunkin’ Donuts iced coffee and her Death-to-Israel Hamas credentials (though who hasn’t wanted to go jihad on her?). There are vocal members of Christian groups that we now need [...]

Trip Report: Four Barrel Coffee

Posted by TheShot on 21 May 2008 | Tagged as: Café Society, Local Brew, Machine

Jeremy Tooker, co-founder of Ritual Roasters, had a bit of a falling out with Ritual’s co-owner, Eileen, and he’s pursued his own vision of a quality coffee business in Four Barrel Coffee: no Wi-Fi, no squatting start-ups that can’t pony up rent, just no-frills retail coffee plus a roasting and distribution operation.
We admire the pursuit [...]

Trip Report: Blue Bottle Cafe @ Mint Plaza

Posted by TheShot on 23 Jan 2008 | Tagged as: Café Society, Local Brew, Machine, Roasting

Today Blue Bottle Coffee Co. opened up their long-anticipated Mint Plaza café — their first true space (besides kiosks and outdoor carts at the Ferry Building and in the East Bay) to showcase James Freeman’s commitment to freshness.

The café is located at a bend in Jesse St. in the Mint Plaza alleyway — in [...]

Trip Report: Coffee Bar

Posted by TheShot on 09 Jan 2008 | Tagged as: Beans, Local Brew, Quality Issues

Previously, we had written about Coffee Bar when it was still under construction. It has since opened on the longest night of the year, December 21 — with limited initial fanfare, as the partners first wanted to iron out some of the kinks that naturally come with opening a new space. And it is a [...]

Trip Report: Cinecittà Bar and Roman Pizza

Posted by TheShot on 21 Aug 2007 | Tagged as: Local Brew

This combination pizza parlor (they serve square pizzas) and wine bar has numerous small café tables indoors and counter seating at the bar/pizza ovens. There’s also limited sidewalk seating out front. The décor is their namesake Roman film studios of Fellini’s 1950s, complete with movie posters (plus an AS Roma kit on the wall by [...]

Trip Report: Bittersweet - The Chocolate Café @ Oakland

Posted by TheShot on 17 Jul 2007 | Tagged as: Local Brew

This Oakland/Rockridge outlet of the small chain is a little smaller than its SF Fillmore District counterpart, but the standards are the same. Outside there’s a sidewalk bench and a couple of chairs; inside there are four beat-up wooden tables and a tendency for houseflies to gather (just something odd about the building dynamics, location, [...]
