the shot,
Como brings back very nice memories.
14 year ago i drank my first Italian cappuccino at the youth hostel. i would probably think different today, but really loved it that memorable day.
and one day later i met another love of my life ; a new york girl. well, better say ; the love of that year :-)

i should go back one day and meet up with you guys.

Costadoro is all over the place in Torino. Freshness issues aside of getting it here, I wasn't very impressed with it when having it in its native region either.

Como is quite nice. I'm not as familiar with the roasters in Lombardia, but I'm sure you can easily find something. The odd thing is that Italy being the size of Arizona, even Illy is considered a local roaster. There's not too much of a major loyalty to the roots where your coffee comes from -- rather un-campanilismo.

And while nearby Milan freakishly underachieves at espresso (a little like the way New York does here), Como proportionately has a number of decent coffee bars for its size. I count 8 cafés with 2 chicchi ratings from the 2008 Gambero Rosso in Como alone.

Ciao!

I'm glad to hear about your "Italian Connection"! My girlfriend has an apt. in Como, so I'm going on my own Bean Quest this summer. No Lavazza this time -- I hope to find a great local roaster who tells me the date of roasting. I suppose one has to enquire at bars & cafes -- if you have any leads for the Lombardia area, grazie in advance!
