New Zealand: The 2006 Best Café Awards

Posted by on 03 Jul 2006 | Filed under: Foreign Brew

Cafe magazine announced their eigth annual awards for the best cafés in New Zealand: News: The 2006 Best Café Awards [varsity.co.nz].

Topping this year’s awards is Workman’s Café in rural Matamata. But given that the runner up. The Sticky Beak Café in Otatara, doesn’t even have an espresso machine, take these ratings with a grain of salt.

UPDATE: July 12, 2006
Still, reports from New Zealand indicate that the introduction of the Café Awards from Café Magazine, now in their eighth year, have done much to raise the standard bar across the nation: New Zealand’s source for food & wine news & recipes on Stuff.co.nz: Turangi cafe’s coffee a winner.

Here I continue to hope that a site like CoffeeRatings.com can help bring about consumer awareness, education, and appreciation for rising espresso standards in San Francisco and beyond.

Today’s The Seattle Times published an article on Espresso Vivace‘s David Schomer and his influence on smaller-scale, higher-quality retail espresso preparation: The Seattle Times: Business & Technology: Vivace founder, David Schomer is a coffee prophet. (Updated link.)

UPDATE: February 20, 2007
Mr. Schomer recently had a nice write-up as a small business “guru” (oh, do I hate the abuse of that word) in BusinessWeek: Higher Grounds.

UPDATE: October 22, 2015
Don’t ask what took the Seattle Times eight years to remember they posted about David before: Vivace’s David Schomer — not Starbucks — ‘made coffee huge in Seattle’ | The Seattle Times.
