Sorry for such a late comment:

Great comments on the competition, but thank you especially the insight into Maui Moka Ka'anapali. As chance would have it, I have 1.5lbs left of a 5lb "order" from a 2003 "wild crop" picking, and roasted up some yesterday (going to give it a few days rest before trying). It's incredibly baggy now, but well, misty memories of an amazing, and long gone coffee.

I did some online research tonight, and turned up this:
http://www.kaanapalicoffeefarms.com/coffee/coffeeinkaanapali.html

It's maybe good news. maybe not. Looks like a yuppy-fing of the remaining 100 acres that Kauai managed to retain of the original 500 acre farm. Supposedly about 25 acres are still the Moka / Yemen stock. Kinda weird arrangements too - sell the land for $1.5, $1.8 million to yuppy farmers, but the farmers' have to turn over their crop to some collective.

Maybe someday soon, we'll be seeing Maui Moka fresh again. If we ever do, and it's even close to what it was like in 1998-2001, I'll buy a deep freeze and pull a George Howell on 50, 100 lbs a year of it. ;)

[...] Yes, it’s that time of year again. So if I may return to my regularly scheduled curmudgeoness… Ho hum. Another year, another series of competitions, another national and world barista champion. I’m not sure why barista competitions suddenly seem so trite and tiresome to me this time around.
[...] Barefoot starts with Andy Newbom (owner and CEO, or “Chief Espresso Officer”), and I couldn’t think of a better person for the role. I first met him as emcee at the last Western Regional Barista Competition (WRBC). There are many great inside stories of how he’s offered his time, energy, and even his spare bedroom to support the training and development of budding, high-quality cafés throughout the West. But most of all, he exudes an infectious enthusiasm for good espresso. Andy visibly loves good espresso the way Homer Simpson loves donuts. [...]

[...] Here’s an update for the fellow home roaster geeks who have lamented the demise of Hawaii’s Ka’anapali Farm … from today’s The Maui News: Buzz over coffee has come back to Kaanapali. As reported here in March, I first spotted the return of the Maui Moka bean — easily my favorite bean stock for homemade single-bean espresso — at this year’s Western Regional Barista Competition. Production of the Maui Moka bean had collapsed with the shut down of its parent farm, Ka’anapali Estates, in 2002. [...]
